Reclaiming our humanity, may be the single most important task for our species in these times. As we adults re discover this, then it can be kindled in our children and consciously lived again.    Darryl Pokea, Psy.D.

Each of our perceptions contains the lessons achieved, those lessons yet to be learned, and the order of those lessons to come.

Thoughts for Fall 2006 with Spring Upon Our Planet's Southern Hemisphere

Democracy malfunctions when politicians lie,
but democracy is self-correcting.
It allows the voters to render judgments iteratively.(over and over)
Jorge Domínguez (1998)

In our liberty, as we choose leaders of nations, corporations, and community, we must also realize our choice affects whether or not we have balance within ourselves.    Dr. Darryl Pokea quoted from his article

Out of Control Yang: The Root of Cancer Chaos, and Dis-"ease"

Weak and insecure people hardly ever say 'sorry'. It is large-hearted and courageous people who are not diminished by saying, 'I made a mistake.' Archbishop Desmond Tutu

Each moment we carelessly take leave from harmonious participation in Cosmic Creation, there will be corresponding disruptions in the Microcosmic life of our body, every body, and the Earth body. Likewise, each moment we fully express our reverence, appreciation and deepest care for all Creation, cascades of wellness and harmony are transfused to all minds, bodies, and spirit matters throughout the Universe. All healthy attunement permeates our own and every One's Uni-Verse within.

Dr. Darryl Pokea

The gigantic catastrophes that threaten us are not elemental happenings of a physical or biological kind, but are psychic events. We are threatened in a fearful way by wars and revolutions that are nothing else than psychic epidemics. At any moment a few million people may be seized by a madness, and then our leaders may precipitate us into a blood bath of war and radioactivity... Instead of being exposed to wild beasts, tumbling rocks, and inundating waters, man is exposed today to the elemental forces of his own psyche. Psychic life is a world power that exceeds by many times all the powers of the Earth... Carl Gustav Jung

Our own personal release from the chaos and stress that seems to be surrounding us is so very simple. We are called upon to remember that a crime against anyone's humanity, including our own, is a crime against All humanity. Until each of us tend to weeding our own garden within, the more widespread crimes against the humanity of many will persist. Each of us must be reflective and introspective and ask the question daily: Have I fully followed the path of my spirit today, harmoniously, with the lessons I came into this existence to learn? Anything else is an abomination against our spirit, our humanity, and the spirit and humanity of our entire species. All these matters may be understood in the Spirit of All for One and One for All. We have only but to remember our purpose and All the lessons we are to learn from All Forms of Being, now, here in the flesh.

Dr. Darryl Pokea

There can be no transforming of darkness into light and of apathy into movement without emotion.

Carl Gustav Jung

It is all so very busy and noisy now as change itself is leading us as much as we think that we are leading that change. All our human history mirrors our erroneous belief systems that are rattled like a snake fearing reproach. Habitually we have imposed our own internal disharmony and division within upon the matters around us. All of us are called to recognize, our addictions to fear-laced beliefs passed on in generations over many Millenium. Whenever we force belief systems upon others, we further the disruptions which have originated from ignorance of ourselves. The ignorance continues to divide us within and keeps us separate from each other in the outer world. All forms of archaic slave/master paradigms are brought to our attention now, as we witness intense force, imposition and dysfunction. Through these experiences, we are called to re-cognize (re-think) that our fears lie within, as they lie to convince us that transformational possibilities are hopeless. Where there is life, there is spirit supporting necessary change and hope. We may be freed from our addictions to the fear-laced beliefs that have narrowed our thoughts and trickled the stream of healthy emotions for some time. The whispers of our spirit perpetually invite new constellations of thoughts and freer flow of healing emotions for the peace and harmony that we all long for deeply in our mind & heart.
Dr. Darryl Pokea

Start by doing what is necessary, then do what is possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible.
Saint Francis of Assisi

... we are beginning to realize that we cannot fix on the outside what is broken deep within the human heart and psyche.

John O'Dea

The great events of world history are, at bottom, profoundly unimportant. In the last analysis, the essential thing is the life of the individual.
This alone makes history, here alone do the great transformations first take place, and the whole future, the whole history of the world, ultimately spring as a gigantic summation from these hidden sources in individuals.
In our most private and most subjective lives we are not only the passive witnesses of our age, and it sufferers, but also its makers. We make our own epoch.
Carl Gustav Jung, 1934

The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.

Friedrich Nietzsche

Our very survival on planet Earth requires sustainable and renewable forms of energy. The entire process towards transformation must be achieved with non-violence and heart-filled compassion in the flesh to lesson needless suffering and disorder for every body, and the planetary body who hosts us.
Dr. Darryl Pokea

We only have to look around us to see how complexity and psychic temperature are still rising: and rising no longer on the scale of the individual but now on that of the planet. This indication is so familiar to us that we cannot but recognize the objective, experiential, reality of a transformation of the planet as a whole.

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, S.J. The Heart of Matter, 1950

During India's struggle for independence from British rule and occupation, Mahatma Gandhi was asked whether his country, would achieve the same standard of living as its colonial power. He firmly commented: It took Britain half the resources of the planet to achieve its prosperity. How many planets will a country like India require?

There is suffering on this planet and there is a need to strengthen our love for our planet and our service to the living Earth.
The Dalai Lama

We are putting on pounds collectively in more than just our personal weight. Nearly 20 pounds of carbon dioxide (C02) are release per gallon of gasoline burned or nearly 1 pound of CO2 per mile driven if your gasoline mileage is 20 miles per gallon. Each gallon of gasoline burned for driving requires 95 pounds of air to combust. For those who travel by air, on average, one pound of C02 is released for each 2 miles traveled for each passenger on a commercial airliner.

Dr. Darryl Pokea

To think that we can have a viable human economy by destroying the Earth economy is absurd.
Thomas Berry

When anyone treats Earth matters as non sentient, they consume ruthlessly. As they take from the planet without reverence for all life and matter as sacred, their consciousness is clouded and in their ignorance they ignore that they are pilfering themselves.

Dr. Darryl Pokea

If everyone lived at the standard of the industrialized countries, it would take two planets comparable to the planet Earth to support them, three more if the population should double, and, if worldwide standards of living should double over the next 40 years, twelve additional "Earths." ...We have been obsessed by thinking, hoping, deluding ourselves that we can somehow go on forever with business as usual, but [we] simply cannot.

Dr. Peter H. Raven

Indigenous people still live in a universe, but we don't; we live in an economic system
Thomas Berry

The first peace, which is the most important, is that which comes within the souls of people when they realize their relationship, their oneness with the universe and all its powers, and when they realize that at the center of the universe dwells the Great Spirit, and that this center is really everywhere, it is within each of us.
Black Elk

Thoughts for Summer 2006

Fear and Franticness

Every unprocessed fear becomes a postponed interaction with our Self. Every action, enacted without chosen intent, forms habitual distractions. These curtail learning as we repetitively run about as an automaton that is as busy on the outside as it is suppressed on the inside. A rapidly swirling boomerang returns to its sender, the source of its motions/e-motions (energy motions). Each of us may lesson the effects of all the spin surrounding us on the outside, as we learn again to be quietly present to and process all our swirling motions and emotions on the inside.
Dr. Darryl Pokea

No passion so effectually robs the mind of all its powers
of acting and reasoning as fear.
Edmund Burke (1729 - 1797)

Our own physical body possesses a wisdom which we who inhabit the body lack. We give it orders which make no sense.
Henry Miller

A Focus Upon All Subtle Healthy Change Stops the Negative Loops

When our perceptions are focused only on the chaos all about, we forget that we are entrapping our own mind and adding to the destruction that we have selectively perceived. Focusing the mind and our perceptions on the subtleties of healthy change, already in progress, stops this looping quandary. The negative focus of collective minds maintains an unhealthy status quo for every body and that includes our own body. Continuous selective attention towards all the adverse dysfunction and pathology takes us down erroneous paths; we waste precious time. As we shift our attention towards a more balanced participation in creation, we create avenues of wellness and prosperity for ourselves, each other, and the planetary body who hosts us.
Dr. Darryl Pokea

Every man is the builder of a temple, called his body, to the god he worships, after a style purely his own, nor can he get off by hammering marble instead. We are all sculptors and painters, and our material is
our own flesh and blood and bones.
Henry David Thoreau

It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinions; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the Great Man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude. Ralph Waldo Emerson

When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.
Victor Frankl

As we witness the deafening chaos manifesting forceful and heartless actions, the heart of our being resounds deeply through prayer and meditation. The silence reverberates our heart beats as an unimpeded echo that undulates towards everyone. The silence, prayer and meditation even resounds the hearts of those who suicidally and heartlessly consume others and the planet who hosts us.
Dr. Darryl Pokea

After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible
is music.
Aldous Huxley

The Consumption That Consumes

When we ruthlessly consume and abuse each other, nature and the planet earth who host us, we forcefully impose dead zones upon these living gifts of matter and energy. We may witness these dead zones form in the diverse ecological systems of our planet as they also form among and within ourselves. Whenever we do not deal with our own dead zones within, as we ourselves have felt abused and consumed, we perpetrate the abuse in these spaces within ourselves and in places outside ourselves. We are all interconnected with each other and the process itself merges with form. What we do on the inside, we do on the outside.
Dr. Darryl Pokea

The hatred you're carrying is a live coal in your heart - far more damaging to yourself than to them.
Lawana Blackwell, The Dowry of Miss Lydia Clark, 1999

All true things must change and only that which changes remains true.
Carl Gustav Jung

If you haven't forgiven yourself something, how can you forgive others?
Dolores Huerta

The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.
Mahatma Gandhi (1869 - 1948)

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Of one thing I am certain, the body is not the measure of healing,
peace is the measure.
George Melton

I became convinced that we're here for each other.
R. Buckminster Fuller 1895-1983, inventor of the geodesic dome

We may easily forget that the healer is within. So much misinformation leads to inflammation as our own body begins to shout out. Inflammatory dis "ease" is the body rebelling against all prevarications (lies) internalized within from without. The body knows all the gymnastics of the mind that follows conflicting beliefs which compromise common sense and healing wisdom. When we make healthy choices within, our mind returns to harmony with the body. No matter what demands, conflicts and compromises seems to be all about, we may stay healthy trusting our spontaneous bouts of gut laughter. This deep humor is mind and body preserving each other to restore vitality. Belly laughs are jogging for our intestines, so we can absorb the healthy stuff and release the rest. Francois Marie Arouet (1694-1778), whose pen name was, Voltaire, said:
The art of medicine consists of amusing the patient while nature cures the disease.
As humor lightens the darkest corridors of the mind, we muse our self, the patient, so we may heal. Is it any wonder why Voltaire, a French humanitarian author, humorist, rationalist and satirist raised consciousness of the many conflicting beliefs in his era, while living to be 84?
Dr. Darryl Pokea

One of the deepest spiritual lessons, we all know intrinsically, is to never violate or manipulate the will or spirit of an other. The conditions that are upon us now, reflect the necessity for every one of us to learn this lesson. Dr. Darryl Pokea

There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.
Albert Einstein

The most revolutionary act one can commit in our world is to be happy.
Hunter "Patch" Adams

A healthy relationship begins within yourself and expands happiness. It extends that happiness in healthier relationships with others. In fast-paced earning a living without living, we may be easily distracted from the joy of this lesson. Healthy relationships with our self and others are precious. They are the heart of all matters as in loving manner, they may be embraced by everyone's heart.      Dr. Darryl Pokea

Choosing Happiness Instead of Stress For Your Body

Innocence is a state in which we are open to the experience of truth. It is the unclouded perception of what is. It is the limited thinking mind that hides our innocence.     P. Raymond Stewart

The human voice can never reach the distance that is covered by the still small voice of conscience.      Mohandas Gandhi

Thoughts for Spring 2006

The appearance of things change according to the emotions, and thus we see magic and beauty in them, while the magic and beauty are really in ourselves.     Kahlil Gibran

Look not mournfully into the past. It comes not back again. Wisely improve the present. It is thine. Go forth to meet the shadowy future, without fear.     Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.
Carl Gustav Jung

How could there be any question of acquiring or possessing, when the one thing needful for a man is to become,  to be at last,  and to die in the fullness of his being.
Antoine De Saint-Exupery

Our lessons to lessen Global Warming are now fully upon us. The climate and ecological changes that we all witness can no longer be ignored. Ecology comes from the Greek word, ecos, meaning, household. Each of our households has its own harmonies and disharmonies that affect our body, every body and the planetary body who hosts us. All of the interacting disharmonies can never be resolved by worry and chatter. The lesson is learning the walk through decisions that matter. All the talk of harmonious energy consciousness becomes the walk as we each practice by making eco-minded purchasing decisions.
Dr.Darryl Pokea

Let There Be Light

A Gaia (Earth) Experience

In organizations, real power and energy is generated through relationships. The patterns of relationships and the capacities to form them are more important than tasks, functions, roles, and positions.     Margaret Wheatley

Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow; it empties today of its strength.    Corrie Ten Boom

We cannot be happy if we expect to live all the time at the highest peak of intensity. Happiness is not a matter of intensity, but of balance and order and rhythm and harmony.     Thomas Merton

As we participate in ever-expanding consciousness, we may observe and choose our lessons as they also, have chosen us.
Dr. Darryl Pokea

The illuminating words below are an excerpt from an address by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, a native Kansan. The Chance for Peace was delivered before the American Society of Newspaper Editors, April 16, 1953. Though it has been 53 years since these lucid words were shared, they remain timeless as they remind us that we do not fully realize what we do to one an other.     Darryl Pokea

A Cross of Iron

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.

This world in arms is not spending money alone.

It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.

The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities.

It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population.

It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals.

It is some 50 miles of concrete highway.

We pay for a single fighter with a half million bushels of wheat.

We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people.

This, I repeat, is the best way of life to be found on the road the world has been taking. (a question here is implied)

This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.

Thoughts for Winter 2006

Understanding Impediments to Healing so that Genuine Transformation May Resume

The truth that many people never understand, until it is too late, is that the more you try to avoid suffering the more you suffer because smaller and more insignificant things begin to torture you in proportion to your fear of being hurt.    Thomas Merton

Everyone May Learn to Practice the Vision Towards Transformation

What we focus our mind upon tends to expand. If there is something negative or destructive, we may initially acknowledge it and then shift our focus upon the healing positive realm as the contrasting view begins its manifest immediately. In this manner, the practice of shifting our focus of mind invites healthy change in all matters.

Two Millennium ago, a Master Teacher taught the lesson for us to practice in his native Aramaic tongue. To appreciate the depth of manifestation intended through his words, we must understand the Aramaic's rich linguistic qualities. It is a most sensual language with kinesthetic rhythms and tones connected with all matter and the body as they contrast, cycle, and shift. The words and their many levels of expression represent true multi-dimensionality.

When this Master said, Turn the Other Cheek, in response to destruction and negativity, everyone truly hearing those words in his time understood that the teaching was to turn the face (mind) kinesthetically away, so as not to strengthen the negativity or degree of emptiness. In other words feed it no energy in thought or flesh. In this place and space, the mind could immediately learn to redirect focus upon dissolving the previous matter. This moment in Luminous Consciousness supports the transformation already underway. This gift is given to each of us in and through whatever circumstance we are receptive to learn.

This Master Teacher's wisdom remains timeless. Even within the linguistic limitations of our current languages, we all may understand that what we focus upon expands and matters. We each may decide what matters we wish to focus upon and give our support to. Whenever the matters we view are discouraging, we may focus on courage. Where there is darkness in understanding, our minds may shift on light illuminating, educating and emerging in those spaces. Where there is profound sadness and despair, we may focus our minds moment-to-moment upon the expansion of joy and hope. This process begins with the mind's attention and intentions as it then finds expression in the flesh of truly loving heart pulses that continue with mind beyond time.

Dr. Darryl Pokea

Be master of your petty annoyances and conserve your energies for the big, worthwhile things. It isn't the mountain ahead that wears you out - it's the grain of sand in your shoe.    Robert Service

The Invitation from Higher Consciousness

We have reached a critical impasse point in our human history. Many conflicts load our mind and body and unconsciously may limit both our personal and collective learning. The more we approach the challenges we face in world events with our conditioned flight, fright, fight responses, the lessor will be our understanding. Each of us is invited to understand that we, personally and collectively form and perpetuate conflict in our world. The disturbing events are the manifestations of our narrow perceptions and limited consciousness that swirl and cycle rapidly through our minds as a boomerang returns to its sender.

As we are receptive and aware, the Higher Consciousness invites us to embrace those lessons, even as they are presented through all the intense worldly events we face. This awakening is offered in the midst of the conflicts. During these times of struggle, we may more fully participate in responsible living.   Every response forms these matters.

When our responses are interwoven with the fabric of ever-expanding spirituality, Higher Consciousness is rediscovered within our human consciousness and illuminates our path as we walk and talk in Light. Every one of our responses are practical lessons that weave in and through our relationships with each other. The lessons are expansive and become wholistic as we learn viscerally, through the care of our body and every body. Heart-felt understanding permeates every thought, each word, and action as we accept and embrace our own invitation to more fully participate in Illuminating Consciousness.

Dr. Darryl Pokea

Do not assume that she who seeks to comfort you now, lives untroubled among the simple and quiet words that sometimes do you good. Her life may also have much sadness and difficulty, that remains far beyond yours. Were it otherwise, she would never have been able to find these words.
Rainer Maria Rilke

Heart Beats, Better Wellness, and Being at Ease

Regardless of whatever rationalizations and defenses that we succumb to in our mind, our body perceives and physically forms every thought, intention, and action. Each heart-beat is pinched ever so slightly by any constricting ego-centric thoughts and greedy intentions, even before they are expressed in actions. The most miniscule thoughts, intentions, and actions of stinginess, dishonesty and hatred, disrupt and impede our heart's beats.

Whenever negative thoughts, intentions and actions occur towards any body, it is as though a vice grip is attached to our heart's own body pinching and even squashing its life-sustaining beats. Whenever our thoughts and belief systems are in a state of rigidification, they are no longer liberating and compassionate. Our heart then proportionately beats less freely and lovingly for our body. Likewise, the vessels providing its nourishment become less flexible. In bettering our wellness, the heart of our body is marvelously sensitive to our gratitude, generosity, and genuineness, all which enhance its full rhythmic harmonic pulse and the free flow of its nourishing vessels.

Our heart beats over 100,000 beats per day, nearly 40 million beats per year, and at least 3 billion times in a 75 year life span. Is it any wonder that all of our thoughts and intentions, as much as our actions, accumulate over a life-time and contribute to the formation of heart ease or dis-ease?
Dr. Darryl Pokea

The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell and
a hell of heaven.     John Milton

Whose Shadow?

We tend to arrange all of our interactions with others through our minds in a range from positive to negative. Our negative experiences are often shadow aspects of ourselves that we do not wish to look at. We bury them in the darkness of our unconscious. In infinitely evolving consciousness, these interactions reflect our lessons in discovering our heart-filled path deeply within. Luminous consciousness urges us to dissolve all the mind's artificially assigned barriers both inside and outside ourselves. Then we may recognize that we have generated both pleasant and unpleasant connections with others. As we compassionately exchange with one an other, we may shine light on the shadow and begin to understand the true aspects of self/Self.

Dr. Darryl Pokea

You must give birth to your images. They are the future waiting to be born. Fear not the strangeness that you feel. The future must enter you long before it happens. Just wait for the hour, the birth of new clarity.

Ranier Maria Rilke (writer and poet)

Quick Flashes or Luminious Consciousness?

Quick images rapidly entering our minds isolate our attention. Without full sensory integration, we limit our awareness. All of our other senses and perceptions become divided as we become visually over-loaded and loose our sense in the midst of so much non-sense. Through discombobulated flashing images, our relationships may also be reduced to immediate projections of our disconnected selves. All these optical illusions keep the mind busy as confined images of "who we think we are" hastily are sent and received. Through all these closed loop visual media processes, we are prone to assume unity with each other as so many of us appear to be viewing the same distorted aberrations. In Luminous Consciousness all we think, say, and do is continuous with the full integration of all our senses and beyond. Authentic relationships with self/Self both within as without are unified as we fully sense, experience and truly know the many manifestations of One an Other.
Dr. Darryl Pokea

Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.
George Bernard Shaw

In times of drmatic change it is the learners who inherit the future. The learned find themselves equipped to live in a world that no longer exists.
Eric Kaufer

The Lure of Pseudo-Spirituality

Lots of Talk Without the Walk

As Mind, Body, and Spirit are integral within each other, a fuller consciousness in spiritual awareness awakens the mind to the pathways of change necessary for better mental health. This of course leads to better health in our body which also returns the mind to better wholeness. When our mind's imbalances, misperceptions and conflicts are not dealt with, a pseudo-spirituality manifests. We may even deepen the trap by joining groups that distract us further. All these defenses hamper spiritual integrity as they arise from ego generated fears that every one of us is required to face. These fears impede everyone's mental and physical health. When we do not attend to the erroneous quirks and fears within our mind, we begin to think they are Divine. Then we worship our own psychopathology as a mirror image of all those unprocesed fears and conflicts in our mind. Receiving our true lessons ceases whenever we hurry with racing mind down paths without careful and care-filled reverence within ourselves of the Divine.
Dr. Darryl Pokea

Man does not change at death into his immortal part, but is mortal and immortal even in life, being both ego and Self.
Carl Gustav Jung

What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.    Ralph Waldo Emerson

Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.
Aristotle (Greek Philosopher, Scientist and Physician, 384 BC-322 BC)

You cannot teach a man anything, you can only help him learn it within himself.    Galileo

Everything is permanent in its cycles of change and renewal and impermanent in its individually enduring identity.
David Richo

As the crust of our outer nature cracks, as the walls of inner separation break down, the inner light gets through, the inner fire burns in the heart, the substance of the nature and stuff of consciousness refines to a greater subtlety and purity and the deeper psychic experiences become possible in this subtler, purer, finer substance; the soul begins to unveil itself, the psychic personality reaches its full stature. The soul then manifests itself as the central being which upholds mind and life and body...It takes up its greater function as the guide and ruler of our nature.
Sri Aurobindo
