Reclaiming our humanity, may be the single most important task for our species in these times. As we adults rediscover this, then it can be kindled in our children and consciously lived again. Darryl Pokea, Psy.D.
Each of our perceptions contains the lessons achieved, those lessons unlearned, and the order of those lessons to come. Darryl Pokea, Psy.D.

Thoughts for Late Fall/Winter 2004
Prophets and Profit
There is so much marketing and sales strategizing in Spirituality, Consciousness, Creativity, Music, Writing and Art. Many websites, E-Mags, E-Zines, and Newsletters are laced with spiritual pilgrimage, vision quests, and vacation travel packages to entertain, distract and escape from inward contemplation. Many have claims of trinkets, video games and even electronic devices that they say expand consciousness, creativity, artistic and musical connection to the Divine. The presentations are so well designed that the hollow words of pseudo-wisdom and over-blown claims and expectations of spirituality are difficult to discern and recognize. There are many of these so-called "experts" who are unable themselves, to live the words of others that they parrot. In their seemingly endless vanities they manipulate others, claiming the vision of the prophets, when their real focus is on profit. All this self-grandizement clogs and congests real understanding of the Divine, the Source of all Enlightenment that is priceless,.... that we all have deeply within. Darryl Pokea
Whose Heart Gets Hardened?
The more hardened a person's heart becomes towards others the more hardened their thoughts, awareness, openness and sensitivity. All this affects not only the lives of every body around them, but the vessel of their own body whose arterial vessels bring life itself, to its cells. Darryl Pokea
On Appearances
No matter what we look like or try to look like on the outside, we're all dealing with the same stuff on the inside. Darryl Pokea
Genuine Gratitude, Health and Responsibility
Every day we can focus our attention on the many life experiences we have and be genuinely grateful. Regardless of the many perceived obstacles, those moments of authentic appreciation are the heart-felt pulse of well-being that preserve the health of our mind and body. Darryl Pokea
Today, more than ever before, life must be characterized by a sense of Universal responsibility, not only nation to nation and human to human, but also human to other forms of life. The Dalai Lama
Humor, Fear and Despair
Humor is exercise for both the mind and body that helps to dissipate all fear and despair. Our gutteral laughs are jogging for the intestines, supporting their working together. The smaller intestine replenishes the body by absorbing the nourishment that we truly need. As the lower and larger intestine is also jogged by deep belly laughs, it makes room for all the new healing nurturance by releasing the stuff we no longer need to keep inside. Darryl Pokea
When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible but in the end, they always fall-think of it, always! Mahatma Gandhi

Thoughts for Fall 2004
Response to a Question from a Young Adult
As we are all spiritual beings having this experience now of mind and body, I was recently asked by a young adult if young spirits seek out guidance through older spirits. The following was my response:
My personal belief is that young spirits are connected to the One Spirit
just as older spirits are. When young spirits are looking for guidance, the
older spirits, if sincere, will direct them back to the Source, the One
Spirit from which we are all manifestations of. Everything is within each
of us independent of time and space if we just let ourselves be. So everything we are
to become as an older spirit, is already now, in a timeless dimension. We
don't have to worry about the guidance, as it is always there in many forms. All we have to do is to accept and be fully present to all that we are.
The concepts of young and old are just our way of explaining these ideas that are
really timeless.
Deepest Peace of Mind and Heart Always Expanding in Understanding. Darryl Pokea, Psy.D.
Always Be Careful and in All Ways Be Filled with Care. Dr. Darryl Pokea
We Can Stress or Fortify Our DNA Shifts in consciousness shift our DNA. At the deepest levels of biological communication, our DNA sculpts our body and is dynamically affected by how consciously we process life events. The twist that protects our DNA becomes vulnerable and begins to uncoil as we loose consciousness and become disheveled in daily life. Likewise, as we live virtuously with the intention of learning life's lessons with ease, our DNA is fortified with the courage of Spirit that guides the peace-filled mind to return harmony and health to the body. Dr. Darryl Pokea
Weak and insecure people hardly ever say 'sorry'. It is large-hearted and courageous people who are not diminished by saying, 'I made a mistake.' Archbishop Desmond Tutu
Insights about Fear and Insecurity
When we are freightened and insecure inside ourselves, we see the world outside us as a negative place and focus only on the negative spaces in the lives of others. We may even start lashing out at the world, creating even more negative places within ourselves and throughout the world. All of us as citizens of planet Earth, including those who lead nations, need to reflect on these matters that we are sculpting inside our mind and body and upon the world. We may then begin to properly weed and tend our garden on our own country's soil and the world's.Dr. Darryl Pokea
Jefferson's Virtue and Vision for Democracy
Thomas Jefferson consciously looked for the best in people. He also recognized the necessity of virtuous living to accompany all political office so that his service, representing and leading a nation's people, would be reverent and humane towards all. He valued and preserved dialogue even when there were highly diverse convictions or numerous conflicts of opinion. The deepest antithesis of democracy may be the loss of a nation and its leaders to live virtuously and value the many voices of its people. Perhaps we should ask: Does negative campaigning trample upon virtues in those running for public office as it focuses on construing vice and demonizing the other candidate? As a consequence, do we as a nation then begin to look only for vice and heinous behavior among each other? We are fortunate in our liberty that we can choose our own perceptions and informed opinions consciously as did Jefferson. Dr. Darryl Pokea
A Comment About All the Exhaustion and Fatigue
Mental fatigue contributes to most of our physical fatigue in daily life. Metabolically, our brain fatigues proportionally to our mental fatigue. When the mind utilizes its physical resonator, that which we call "brain" and exhausts it, we feel physically exhausted. Hans Selye knew this phenomena well when he expressed, "Its not stress that kills us, it is our reaction to it." Two very high energy demanding psychological defenses, denial and projection, initiated by the mind, consume enormous amounts of mental energy that in turn fatigues the brain metabolically. This in turn translates into our perception that we are physically exhausted. Repetitive and routine tasks throughout the day may be perceived as boring or soothing depending how we frame them with our mind. The same is true for repetitive emotions being processed deep within our brain. If we are constantly having denial or projection of our deepest fears and insecurities, we perceive these feelings are not within us, but in others in the outside world. This perpetuates a reciprocating loop of heavy energy consumption. The loop is that we never deal with the real 'matters' within because all mental energy is devoted to seeing them in everyone else. This regenerates the same denied and projected pattern of fear and insecurity that is accompanied by the reoccurring feeling of endless dissatisfaction in daily living and never understanding why. It is here that the deepest compassion is offered by our spirit and sometimes experientially shown to us in kind feedback from others. With courage, the support of spirit, and the generous feedback and understanding from others, we can consciously break the loop. The fatigue and exhaustion start fading as we proportionally start to process our own fears and insecurities. Then all the fatigue and congestion of emotion begin to be replaced with an abundance of mental, physical, and spiritual energy. Dr. Darryl Pokea
Consciousness, Carefulness, Caring, & Violence
Many try to cope with the violence in our world by avoiding any awareness of its many tangling webs. The attempt to cover the violence by keeping it out of the conscious mind is an illusion that diminishes consciousness of the caring and compassion that are also abundant in our world. Consciousness is carefulness and being full of care. Both carefulness and being full of care are necessary to embrace the violence inside and outside of us. When the disturbances of violence, whether inside us or outside us, are faced and embraced with an abundance of compassion, the violent spaces begin to be replaced with our returning to a state of well being. Without compassion, the suffering resulting from the violence weakens and disrupts our relationships with everyone including our loved ones and ourselves. Violence eventually ends as its entropy goes against the essence of nature and cannot be sustained. Compassion remains plentiful in the endless continuum of being for our deepest coping and consciousness. Dr. Darryl Pokea
What this country needs, what I think God wants us to do, is not practice piecemeal charity but engage in wholesale justice. Justice is at the heart of religious faith. When we see Christ empowering the poor, scorning the powerful, healing the world's hurts, we are seeing transparently the power of God at work.
Reverend William Sloane Coffin
Fear of something is at the root of both hatred for others and hate within and will eventually destroy the hater. George Washington Carver
Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves. Carl Gustav Jung
The significant problems we face cannot be solved by the same level of thinking that created them. Albert Einstein

St. John of the Cross
As the body heals its wounds strengthened through the support of mind, so too, the mind's wounds may heal in prayer and meditation through the support of Spirit. Simultaneously, the healing mind, strengthened and purified through Spirit, begins healthier energies of motion," e-motions," for the deeper healing resonance with the body. "All Ways" Mind, Body, and Spirit are inseparable for the harmony of health and wellness.. Dr. Darryl Pokea

"Meditation: Steady As We Go"
Just as treasures are uncovered from the earth, so virtue appears from good deeds, and wisdom appears from a pure and peaceful mind. To walk safely through the maze of human life, one needs the light of wisdom and the guidance of virtue. The Buddha
When we have the experience of being humiliated by someone, we have choice. Our ego would like us to emote, engage negative thinking and internalize that experience as part of its repertoire of illusions. It wishes to engage us in another distraction from the Light of Understanding all that we are as we participate in this very human existence. In the moment of anyone attempting to humiliate us, our Spirit brings forth humility to protect our humanity. This humility may instantly replace any ego driven emotions or negative distracting thoughts humbly with love. We may then be grateful for the experience as part of our repertoire of humane learning and Awakening Light.Dr. Darryl Pokea

Pretty much all the honest truth telling there is in the world is done by children. Oliver Wendell Holmes
If humanity is to survive, happiness and inner balance are crucial. Otherwise the lives of our children and their children are more likely to be unhappy, desperate and short. Material development certainly contributes to happiness - to some extent - and a comfortable way of life. But this is not sufficient. To achieve a deeper level of happiness we cannot neglect our inner development. Dalai Lama
Following our path with the intention of alignment with Divine Consciousness can be difficult. It is frequently accompanied by the daily pain of recognizing our ego so that it may return to the earth as the fertilizer that it is. Perhaps out of that humus comes the humor and humility to keep our intent and manifestation pure so that we don't end up marketing fertilizer to one another. Dr. Darryl Pokea

"Meditation: Going Beyond Ego Barriers"
Thoughts for Spring 2004
My wife, Jan Jennings, recently shared her thoughts about lying in an exchange with an e-mail friend. Here are her words:
I think that lying takes so much energy. Once you project a lie, then you have to continue putting it forth. You have to be so vigilant that after awhile you believe the lie yourself. Then it is no longer a lie. It becomes an estrangement from yourself. That is what is so terrible about dishonesty. Eventually it becomes a disconnection from your own spirit.
If the person ever wants to reconnect to their spirit, it can be a slow painful process of self reflection. The person eventually has to look in the mirror and own that they have been lying to themselves. And they probably have to look at all the pain that they have caused others.
I personally prefer to live my life openly. It's simpler and takes less energy. If there is something that I might consider doing that would require covering up later, I don't do it because it's not worth it, whatever it might be. If there is a person or situation that requires me to be something other than myself, then I don't need that person or situation. It isn't worth it because the dishonesty would mean the disconnection from my spirit and the sacrifice of any happiness in life.
On another plane, nothing can be hidden anyway. We are all connected to each other, to our spirit, and to all that is or the Divine, whether we choose to be aware of it or not. If a thought goes out into the ethers, it is energy and it is there forever. Any intelligence or consciousness can pick it up. So the thought that we can lie is an illusion. We cannot hide. We are not separated. Sincerely, Jan janjenningsart.com

For our evolution to continue we must let go of any remnants of the "Slave/Master Paradigm" from previous and archaic civilizations. This affects our minds and bodies even now more than we realize. Darryl Pokea, Psy.D.
There can be so much over-regulation, constriction, and repetitive patterns of hostility in our work place. These congested patterns of thought and emotion during the day, can easily carry into our home, recreation and sleep life. The way we are designed, what we think and feel, are just as important to the brain, mind and body heath as what we eat. We all can know and understand that with our mind, the brain can rest and restore by thinking about images of a Hawaii vacation without actually being there. This makes the economics of good mind/body health less expensive than a travel agency. As we understand and practice this wonderful neurological feature, changing both tasks and images in our mind frequently during the day, we can give ourselves a free vacation with refreshing restoration.
Both of the above are excerpts from Dr. Pokea's article:Can't Get to Sleep? It's Only a Matter of Letting Go. For additional suggestions in integrating these ideas practically in your life you may view his article: 15 Suggestions to Re-Mind and Reduce Stress
Each time we are attuned to a child we are attuned to an aspect of our own child within. Our child within is part of who we are. We strengthen this foundation within ourselves, each time we support children and accept who they are. As our children remind us how to embrace them, we are reminded how to embrace ourselves. Jesus of Nazareth said, "Become again like little children." As we each do this, we reclaim our humanity, our light shines and so do our children.
The above is an excerpt from Dr. Pokea's article "Embrace Each Child and You Embrace Yourself" published at the Earthpages website. You may view the entire article there as well as dialogue, viewpoints, poetry, music, images and news items for protecting and preserving all in our global community

Our cells have a natural proclivity towards forgiveness. They experience insults and are wounded all the time, yet release, heal and go on moment to moment in their life activities. It is too bad that our minds do not more often follow our right brain's attunement to this natural process in our body's cells. As we understand this again, we can forgive seventy times seven onto infinity. Darryl Pokea
Constant kindness can accomplish much. As the sun makes ice melt, kindness causes misunderstanding, mistrust, and hostility to evaporate. Albert Schweitzer
Giving love is an education in itself. Eleanor Rosevelt
Put away the book, the description, the tradition, the authority, and take the journey of self-discovery. Love, and don't be caught in opinions and ideas about what love is or should be. When you love, everything will come right. Love has its own ac on. Love, and you will know the blessings of it. Keep away from the authority who tells you what love is and what it is not. No authority knows and he who knows cannot tell. Love, and there is understanding.Krishnamurti
These challenging times allow us opportunity to observe with humor and lucidity. They provide an avenue to strengthen our courage by living virtuously and by accepting even the most difficult Olympic lessons that our Spirits came here to learn. All this is possible in these times through our interactions within our Self and with Others daily as we live in and experience this world. An excerpt from Dr. Pokea's Presentation: Recognizing the Counterfeiters for Your Survival
Thoughts for Late Winter 2004
There is nothing spiritual about the theft of intellectual property. All our artists, writers, journalists, prefessional speakers, musicians, composers, inventors, even writers of the program language we use on our computers and the internet earn their living this way. They must be able to support themselves both before, during, and after their creative endeavors to continue their best work. It is important they we all keep this in our consciousness as we enjoy their intellectual property through their inspirations, creativity and service that preserve our humanity."Darryl Pokea, Psy.D.
We are living in times where it has become commonplace for many adults to deal with things by not dealing with them and mindlessly dishing it out to other people including our kids. The etymology of "Dis" is disrespect. We can all witness the effects of mindlessness in the disrespect, distrust, dishonesty, distaste, dislike, disgust, disease and disharmony among us. We adults can quickly put an end to our mindlessness. All we have to do is listen to the wisdom of our kids as they say, "Stop dissing me."Darryl Pokea, Psy.D.
Weak and insecure people hardly ever say 'sorry'. It is large-hearted and courageous people who are not diminished by saying, 'I made a mistake.' Archbishop Desmond Tutu
Every negative thought may be watched along with all the thoughts that parade across the screen of our mind. There is no need to disrupt the parade by stopping them with our mind's focus. We can observe them as they make their noise and pass knowing that the real music and joy in watching continue long after the parade.
Darryl Pokea, Psy.D.
The deeper features of reality are found only in perceptual experience.
William James
We can begin to understand that more than 96% of our actions go on unconsciously. This is how all habits originate. We also then can learn about the conscious and unconscious nonverbal messages that we pass around to one another in our actions and non-actions. These communicate more about our humanity than language ever could. With these understandings we may know how the habit of compassion also develops.
Darryl Pokea, Psy.D.
The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it.

"Depression is a sign that things are not healthy in the mind and body. You cannot merely replace depression with function by going back to work and taking anti-depressants. To let go of it completely, courageously look at all of its illusions and misperceptions. Then Spirit can enter the process and depression is replaced with consciousness, compassion, and meditation."
